There are lots of wireless earbuds that look good on paper but become less impressive once they actually make their way into your ears. The Status Pro X Earbuds have taken a different approach. They feel like Status is trying to build an earbud for people who care about the details, but without making something overly complicated. After spending time with them, I find that the balance of features is one of the Pro X’s biggest strengths.
First Impression
The Pro X makes a good first impression from the onset. Before I even put the earbuds in I’m impressed by the design. The brushed charging case is compact, minimalist, and modern without trying too hard to stand out. The earbuds nest securely inside, and it slips easily into my pocket or a bag. I don’t have to worry about the case popping open or losing an earbud somehow.
The earbuds themselves have a small, squared-off design that looks modern and industrial. They sit much more comfortably in my ears than something like AirPods with their longer stems. The Pro X are simple, clean, and understated.
More importantly, they are extremely comfortable. The included silicone ear tips give me three sizes to work with, so I can choose which size creates a secure seal. Which is nice for avoiding that plugged-up, uncomfortable feeling I get from some copy-cat in-ear headphones. Status has clearly put some thought into the ergonomics and design.
Setup
Getting started is refreshingly straightforward.. The instructions are clear enough that I can pull the Pro X out of the box and start listening without needing a complicated tutorial. The Status Hub app adds another layer of control. It includes listening modes, an eight-band EQ, customizable controls, and battery information. Pretty robust offering for an earbud app.
The one thing that takes me a little getting use to is the touch controls. Some of the commands are more nuanced than others. For example, it takes me some practice to get the double-tap to advance to the next track consistently. I had to find the spot on the earbud where the touch surface responds most reliably. It becomes more natural once I figure it out but there is definitely a short learning curve.
Everyday Experience
The fit is where the Pro X Earbuds really start to win me over. I’m not just wearing these at my desk or in the library. I wear them while moving around, working outside, and mowing the lawn. Even when I’m sweating like an offensive lineman, they never feel like they’re about to fall out.
That secure fit also helps with the passive isolation. The active noise cancellation also gives me another way to shut out the world (Status rates the ANC at up to 52dB). Additionally, there is a transparency mode when I need to hear what’s happening around me.
Sound
The biggest reason to take the Pro X seriously is superior engineering inside each earbud. Instead of relying on a single driver, Status uses a three-driver system. First, the 12mm dynamic driver handles the low end while two Knowles balanced-armature drivers handle the middle and higher frequencies. The result is a sound that feels full without sacrificing detail.
I also appreciate having the EQ available in the app. It gives me full control so I can shape the presentation to match what I’m listening to. That way, I’m not stuck with just one tuning regardless of what’s playing.
Battery
Battery life is solid for most everyday use. Status rates the Pro X for up to 32 hours of total playback with the charging case. Although actual endurance varies depending on volume, ANC, and codec choice. LDAC, in particular, can reduce playback time. If I could change one thing about the Pro X, it would be a stronger battery life.
Summary
The Status Pro X doesn’t feel like an earbud designed simply to check boxes. It feels like Status has excelled in their mission to make an expansive, detailed and inspiring the sound. I especially appreciate the little things like fit, controls, sound, app customization, and physical design. Status has given each of them attention to create the Pro X as a complete package.
For me, the combination of a comfortable, secure fit and genuinely engaging sound makes these easy to keep reaching for day after day. The touch controls take getting used to, but that’s a relatively small complaint. After spending real time with the Pro X, I am impressed by how well Status manages to combine serious audio hardware with an earbud that’s still comfortable and practical enough for everyday life.
