An Honest Backyard Test of Chef’s Temp Thermometers

I don’t do gentle cooks. When I test a thermometer, I take it through fire. That’s exactly what I did with the Chef’s Temp Pro Temp Plus. First up was a reverse-seared tri-tip—low and slow to start, then blasted at 500°F to lock in that crust. The needle probe never blinked. Even in the searing zone, it read fast, clean, and accurate. That kind of heat usually sends devices screaming, and unfortunately, I’ve even broken a few store-bought options. Not this one. It stayed solid, locked into the meat like it belonged there. The app didn’t try to impress me with bells and whistles. It just worked.

The layout is clean, the alerts come when they were supposed to, and I never second-guess the data. The feel of the unit in my hand matters too – solid construction, crisp screen even under backyard glare, and buttons that didn’t feel like mush. There was one moment of friction. I stepped too far from the grill mid-cook and lost the Bluetooth connection. Took a minute to get it back. It was frustrating, but not fatal. Once reconnected, it picked up where it left off, and I didn’t lose any ground on the cook.

Later, I ran chicken legs through a smoke session. Slower pace, less drama, but I watched for consistency. The Pro Temp Plus tracked the whole way without dropping the thread. I didn’t have to hover or open the lid more than I wanted. Temps held, alerts fired, and I trusted it because it read similar to the attached probe provided by my Pit Boss smoker. That’s the key: I trusted it. When I cook, I want to know the read is right. Not kind of right. Not five seconds late. Right now. This one gives me that.

The Temp S1 Smart Grill Gauge

Then I moved on to testing the Chef’s Temp S1 Smart Grill Gauge. It slid right into my lid like it was built for it—no tools, no hacky mods. That was a good sign. I’m not interested in fidgeting with hardware. I just want it to fit and go. Once installed, it added a whole new level to how I manage my pit. Pairing it up with the app is easy, and it connects to Wi-Fi within a few taps, I was watching my pit temp climb from the other side of the yard. I liked how fast it responded to changes.

I liked that I could step inside for a drink and still know exactly where my heat was holding. I can watch a game in my living room without the fear of an overcook. The accuracy was impressive—better than my old analog lid gauge by miles – and that made all the difference when I was trying to keep things steady for a long indirect cook. I also appreciated that the base unit felt like it could take some heat. I didn’t dunk it, obviously, but it shrugged off a bit of rain mist and didn’t seem delicate. That’s important to me. Cooks don’t always happen on blue-sky days.

Working Together

The S1 plays well with my existing setup. I didn’t add the fan accessory, but I could see how it would make things even easier. As it stood, I used the S1 mainly to monitor and maintain, and it kept my fire on point. During one test, I had chicken on the indirect side for a little over an hour. I checked my phone maybe three times. That’s it. I didn’t touch the grill once. The S1 did the watching. It gave me the peace of mind to walk away – something I’m usually reluctant to do when using a grill.

What I liked most was how these two tools worked together. The Pro Temp Plus gives me precision inside the meat. The S1 watched the environment. Together, they gave me complete control without needing to babysit a cook. I didn’t feel anxious – didn’t poke and prod or guess. I cooked. Just got outside and enjoyed the process. Sure, the Bluetooth range on the Plus could be better (but wi-fi is awesome), and maybe I’ll pick up a fan for the S1 down the line. But even as-is, they’re both miles ahead of what I used before. No gimmicks. Just tools that work. I’ll keep using them, and I’ll keep trusting them.
