My first impression of the new Alpaca Gear Box two-pack is that it is versatile and durable. Taking them out of the shipping packaging I notice they have a much more stylish design then the traditional boxy storage container. This is partially because the lid is designed to channel water to drain off of the lid. Additionally, the new Alpaca Gear Box is designed to stack, so multiple boxes can stack cleanly. However, the coolest thing I notice is the transparent Clearview Polycarbonate lid. This clear lid allows me to see into the box and locate my gear at a glance!
Playing around and exploring the Alpaca Gear Box reveals the removable lid is also a combination hinge/latch design so I can open the lid from either side. I like that I can simply lift the lid to grab something out, or completely remove the lid if I need to for packing. The Alpaca Gear Box lid also has a gasket seal making it waterproof and dustproof. Finally, the Alpaca Gear Box (available in slate blue or mirage tan) is designed to configure with Alpaca Gear pods (not included) for additional organization.

For our first adventure, we use the Alpaca Gear Box for a hiking beach outing. I tell my kids to load up the Alpaca Gear Box with their hiking packs. Meanwhile, I use the Alpaca Gear pods to pack some snacks. The Alpaca Gear pods (available in 5 and 10 liter) hold their shape with foam-filled structured sides and bottom panels. This allows me to easily stack them and keep things organized. I love the see-through zippered top so I know exactly where things are located. The addition of a low-profile top grab handle is ingenious; they are easy to transport and the clean sides mean hang-up free packing.
I reconnect with my kids and they already have the Alpaca Gear Box loaded in the back of the Suburban. I appreciate how simple they are to use. They weigh only 6.1 lbs. when empty (max carry weight is 50 pounds). So, even my kids can mostly manage them on their own. When we arrive at the state park, the clear flip lid lets me quickly locate what we need and access it easily. The Alpaca Gear pods transfer nicely to the inside of a pack. With in moments we are ready for an afternoon of fun!
